Biography
After serving as principal flute with the prestigious Los Angeles Philharmonic, Julien Beaudiment is now principal flute with the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon, under the direction of Daniele Rustioni. He also teaches at the Conservatoire de Région de Rueil Malmaison (Paris) and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, where he succeeded his illustrious predecessor Philippe Bernold. He also held the same position with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He is currently the only French musician to have held this position in a British orchestra, and one of the few to have done so in an American orchestra.
Originally from La Rochelle and Bordeaux, he crossed the Channel at the age of 18 to study at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Paul Edmund-Davies. He then entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he won first prizes in flute and chamber music in the class of Sophie Cherrier and Vincent Lucas.
The years he spent in London and Los Angeles had a definitive impact on his life, both personally and musically.
His solo career developed rapidly after graduating from the Paris Conservatoire. He appears as soloist at renowned festivals and on major international stages, including Théâtre du Châtelet, Salle Gaveau, Marrinsky in St. Petersburg, Khumo Art Hall and Art Center in Seoul, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Konzerthaus in Berlin, Beijing National Center for the Performing Arts, Chicago Symphony Center, the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, accompanied by numerous orchestras, including the Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Lyon, the St Petersburg Marriinsky Orchestra, the Stuttgart Kammerorchester, the Varna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie am Rhein, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre philharmonique de Nice.
From the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to Tokyo's Suntory Hall, from Amsterdam's Concertgebouw to London's Royal Albert Hall, he performs in the world's finest concert halls, invited by the most prestigious orchestras, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Gustavo Dudamel, Esa Pekka Salonen, Sir Colin Davis, Christoph Eschenbach, Paavo Järvi, Michael Tilson Thomas, Kirill Petrenko, Charles Dutoit, Semyon Bychkov, Philippe Jordan, William Christie...
“Julien Beaudiment is one of the greatest flautists I know, and he ideally represents the great French flute school.” - Christoph Eschenbach
An avid chamber musician, he won the Barcelona International Duo Sonata Competition with pianist Laetitia Bougnol. He has also performed with Sarah Nemtanu, Marie-Pierre Langlamet, Richard Hardwood, Bruno Fontaine, Jean François Zygel, Manuel Rossfelder and the Psophos and Diotima quartets.
His discography includes three recordings: “California dreamin'” for the Klarthe label, and “Badinerie” in recital with harpist Marie Pierre Langlamet for the Orchid Classics label, and “Mozart” accompanied by the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon.
He has collaborated with choreographers Régine Chopinot and Benjamin Millepied, played Bach solo and expanded his activities by recording in London at Abbey Road with pop star Sarah Brightman, in South Korea for national broadcaster KBS, or in the studio during his American years in Los Angeles for the series “Doctor Who” and “Battle Star Galaktica”, as well as collaborating with actors Seth Macfarlane and Julie Andrews, pop stars John Legend, Antony and the Johnsons, and Ruben Blades.
Every summer, he teaches at the Académie internationale d'été de Nice and the Académie du Domaine Forget in Canada, as well as in numerous master classes around the world: Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, Manhattan School and Juilliard School in New York, Université de Montréal, Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Ljubljana Conservatory, Musikhochschule in Hamburg, Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève, Beijing Central Conservatory, Shanghai Academy of Music...
